Würzburg – young and old

Würzburg, the lively university and congress city, is located on the Main river in the middle of vineyards. It is towered over by its landmark, the Marienberg Fortress, which was first mentioned in a document in 704. The city experienced its heyday under the rule of the prince bishops from the art-loving House of Schönborn.

Between 1720 and 1744, Balthasar Neumann built the "castle above the castles", the prince-bishop's residence. The Venetian Giovanni B. Tiepolo created the largest painting in the world with the huge ceiling fresco of the famous staircase. Since 1981, the residence has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding cultural asset.

Other sights in Würzburg include the Old Main Bridge with the statues of saints, the Cathedral of St. Kilian and neighboring Neumünster, whose Lusam Garden houses the grave monument of Walther von der Vogelweide. Not to forget the late Gothic Marienkapelle on the market square and the Main Franconian Museum with the world's largest collection of Riemenschneider.

The varied cultural offerings in Würzburg range from the traditional Mozart Festival to the International Film Weekend and the largest Africa Festival in Europe. In addition to theaters and cabarets, museums and galleries set impressive accents. The hearty Franconian cuisine and the many traditional wine festivals also represent highlight of Würzburg.
