Würzburg

Würzburg fascinates with its contrasts: here art-historical highlights, museums, UNESCO World Heritage residence, tradition and pride - there joie de vivre, exuberance, high-tech companies, science, progress - around 37,000 students enliven the 129,000-inhabitant city on the Main river.

Würzburg has history with a future: Founded 1000 BC. by the Celts, later a Frankish duke's seat and since 1030 a bishop's seat. People quickly realized that the geographic location primarily had attractive political and economic advantages. Würzburg is home to one of the oldest universities in the German-speaking world. Important scientists such as Koelliker and Virchow worked here. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, one of 14 Nobel Prize winners who have researched and taught here, discovered X-rays here in 1895.

The Würzburg Residence, Balthasar Neumann's magnificent building and UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts visitors - among other things with what is probably the most beautiful staircase and a unique ambience.
